Enter Through the East Gopuram

Enter the temple through the Ashta Shakti Mandapam near the East Gopuram. This is the main tourist entrance. Deposit shoes at the designated area.

Visit Meenakshi Shrine First

Proceed to the Meenakshi Amman shrine first, as per temple tradition. The goddess holds a parrot in her hand and is adorned with intricate jewellery.

Visit Sundareswarar Shrine

Next, visit the Sundareswarar (Shiva) shrine. The main lingam here is considered swayambhu (self-manifested). The Nandi mandapam faces the sanctum.

Explore the Golden Lotus Tank

Visit the Porthamarai Kulam (Golden Lotus Tank) in the centre of the complex. This is where Tamil Sangam poets were said to have their works judged.

Walk Through the Thousand Pillar Hall

Visit the Aayiram Kaal Mandapam (Thousand Pillar Hall), now a temple art museum. Marvel at the intricately carved pillars and the musical pillars that produce different notes.
