How to Perform Aarti Step by Step

Stand or sit before the deity with the aarti plate in your right hand and the bell in your left. Light the diya or camphor. Begin ringing the bell continuously with a steady rhythm. Start singing the aarti - the specific song depends on which deity you are worshipping. While singing, move the aarti plate in a clockwise circular motion before the deity's face, then the full body, and finally at the feet. Complete at least three full circles at each level. The motion should be smooth and reverent. After the aarti song concludes, place the plate down, cover the flame momentarily with your hands, then bring your palms to your closed eyes and forehead. Ring the bell a final time and bow.

Each major deity has specific aarti songs sung during worship. "Om Jai Jagdish Hare" is the universal aarti sung at most Hindu gatherings, praising the Lord of the Universe.
