Walk to the Sangam viewpoint or the bridge above to see the dramatic meeting of the green Bhagirathi and blue-brown Alaknanda rivers. The distinct colors of the two rivers are clearly visible as they merge to form the Ganga.
Climb down the steep steps from the town to the confluence ghat. This is where you can touch the actual point where two rivers become the Ganga. Many pilgrims take a holy dip at this most sacred of the five confluences.
Visit the ancient Raghunath Temple dedicated to Lord Rama near the confluence. The temple is believed to be from the Gupta period (4th-5th century) and features a unique black stone idol of Lord Rama. This is where Lord Rama is said to have performed penance.
