Kal Bhairav Temple in Ujjain is one of the most unique temples in India - the deity here is offered liquor (madira) as prasad, and reportedly drinks it. The priest pours liquor into a plate held near the idol's mouth, and it is visibly consumed. Kal Bhairav is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva who guards the eight directions. The temple is an essential part of the Ujjain pilgrimage circuit, and according to tradition, visiting Mahakaleshwar without first visiting Kal Bhairav is considered incomplete. The temple is especially active during the Kumbh Mela period.
