Approach the temple from the main road near the Phalgu River. The temple is on the river bank. Many devotees take a dip in the Phalgu (when water is present) before entering the temple.
Enter the temple built by Ahilya Bai Holkar in the 18th century. The main sanctum houses a 40 cm footprint of Lord Vishnu imprinted on solid rock, set in a silver basin. Offer prayers at the sacred footprint.
Gaya is the most important site for performing Pind Daan (ancestral offerings) in Hinduism. If performing Pind Daan, engage a local Gayawal (hereditary priest) who will guide you through the elaborate rituals.
Visit the Akshayavat (immortal banyan tree) inside the temple complex, which is mentioned in the Ramayana. Also visit the smaller shrines within the complex before exiting.
