Take an auto or shared vehicle to the top of Nilachal Hill. The road winds up the hill. During festivals, vehicles may be restricted and you may need to walk the last stretch.
Deposit footwear and prohibited items at the counter. Join the free darshan queue or purchase a VIP ticket for faster entry. During Ambubachi Mela, expect very long waits.
Descend a narrow, dark stairway into the underground Garbhagriha. The sanctum houses the Yoni-shaped stone, the sacred symbol of Goddess Kamakhya. A natural spring keeps the stone moist. Darshan is brief due to the narrow passage.
Visit the other temples on Nilachal Hill dedicated to the Dasa Mahavidyas (Ten Tantric Goddesses) including Tara, Bhuvaneshwari, Bagalamukhi, Chinnamasta, Tripura Sundari, and others.
Collect prasad (sindoor, red cloth, and flowers). Enjoy the panoramic views of the Brahmaputra River from the hilltop before descending.
