The Hindu wedding, or Vivaha, is one of the most elaborate and spiritually significant ceremonies in any culture. Considered a samskara (sacrament) rather than a mere social contract, Hindu marriage unites two souls in a sacred bond witnessed by Agni (the fire god), family, and community. The ceremonies span multiple days and include rituals that invoke divine blessings for love, prosperity, fertility, and spiritual growth. While traditions vary across regions, castes, and communities, certain core elements - the sacred fire, the seven vows, and the joining of hands and hearts - remain universal across all Hindu wedding traditions.

Pre-Wedding Rituals

Hindu weddings begin with several pre-wedding ceremonies. Roka or Tilak is the formal engagement where both families agree to the match and exchange gifts. Sangeet is a musical evening where families celebrate with song and dance. Mehendi (henna) is applied to the bride's hands and feet in elaborate designs, symbolizing love and auspiciousness. Haldi (turmeric) ceremony involves applying a paste of turmeric, sandalwood, and rosewater to the bride and groom at their respective homes for purification and beautification. The Ganesh Puja is performed to remove obstacles, and invitations are sent after consulting the auspicious date (muhurat) from the Hindu calendar.

The Core Wedding Ceremony

The main wedding ceremony takes place around a sacred fire (havan kund). The priest invokes Agni as the divine witness. Kanyadaan, performed by the bride's father, is the ceremonial giving away of the daughter - considered one of the greatest acts of merit (punya). Pani Grahan sees the groom take the bride's hand, symbolizing acceptance of responsibility. Mangal Phere or Saat Phere is the most recognizable ritual - the couple walks seven times around the sacred fire, each round accompanied by a specific vow covering nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, progeny, health, and lifelong friendship. After the seventh round, the marriage is considered complete and irrevocable.

Sacred Symbols of Hindu Marriage

Sindoor (vermilion) is applied to the parting of the bride's hair by the groom, representing the blessing of Goddess Parvati for a long and happy married life. Regional Wedding Traditions

While core elements remain consistent, Hindu weddings vary beautifully across regions. In South India, the ceremony centers on tying the Thali (mangalsutra equivalent) with three knots. Tamil weddings feature the Kashi Yatra, a playful ritual where the groom pretends to leave for a pilgrimage before being convinced to marry. Bengali weddings include the Subho Drishti where bride and groom see each other for the first time through betel leaves. Marathi weddings feature the Antarpat ritual where a cloth curtain separates the couple until the auspicious moment. Rajasthani weddings are known for colorful processions and the groom arriving on horseback (Baraat).

Post-Wedding Rituals

After the wedding ceremony, several traditions mark the bride's transition to her new family. Vidaai is the emotional farewell where the bride leaves her parents' home, throwing handfuls of rice over her shoulder to wish prosperity for the family she leaves behind. Griha Pravesh is the bride's ceremonial entry into the groom's home, where she is welcomed by her mother-in-law and steps over a threshold of rice. The bride kicks over a vessel of rice with her right foot, symbolizing prosperity entering the home. Mooh Dikhai is when the bride is formally introduced to the extended family and receives blessings and gifts. These rituals ease the significant life transition and welcome the bride into her new family.
