Birth at Trimbakeshwar

The Godavari's source is Trimbakeshwar, a town dominated by the ancient Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple. The Pushkaram Festival

Every 12 years, when Jupiter enters Leo, the Godavari celebrates Pushkaram — a 12-day bathing festival that draws millions. The most recent was in 2015, and the next will be in 2027. The ghats at Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh are the epicenter of this celebration. People from across South India travel hundreds of kilometers for a single dip, believing that the river's spiritual power peaks during these 12 days.

Cities Along Her Banks

Nashik is where the Kumbh Mela happens and where Ram is believed to have lived during exile. Nanded houses the Sikh shrine Hazur Sahib. Rajahmundry has the most beautiful Godavari ghats. The best way to experience the Godavari is at Rajahmundry, where the river is wide and majestic. Take a boat ride at sunset — the water turns gold, temples line the banks, and the sound of evening bells carries across the water. In Nashik, visit during Kumbh or any full moon — the Ramkund ghat is where Rama himself is believed to have bathed. Bring a small container and take some water home; South Indian families keep Godavari water just as North Indians keep Ganga water.
