Mythology & Rise to Power

Originally a mortal, Kubera performed severe tapas and was rewarded by Brahma with immortality and lordship over wealth. He ruled Lanka before his half-brother Ravana seized it. Shiva then granted him the golden city of Alaka on Mount Meru.

King of Yakshas

Kubera commands the Yakshas and Guhyakas — nature spirits who guard hidden treasures. His magical flying chariot Pushpaka was later stolen by Ravana and eventually used by Rama. The Yakshas serve as protectors of wealth in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions.

Iconography & Symbols

Kubera is depicted as a stout, fair-complexioned figure adorned with gold jewelry. He holds a money pot (Nidhi) and a mongoose that spits gems. His pot belly symbolizes prosperity, and he guards two great treasures: Padma and Shankha Nidhi.

Worship for Prosperity

Kubera is worshipped during Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya for wealth blessings. A Kubera Yantra is placed in homes and businesses. The Kubera Mantra is chanted for removing financial obstacles and attracting abundance.
