Origin & Mythology

Brahma is said to have emerged from the cosmic golden egg (Hiranyagarbha) or from a lotus growing from Vishnu's navel. He created the universe through his thought and the Vedas through his four mouths. His creation includes all living beings, the elements, and time itself.

Iconography & Symbols

Brahma has four heads facing the four directions, symbolizing the four Vedas. He holds the Vedas, a water pot (kamandalu), a rosary (mala), and a lotus. His vehicle (vahana) is the swan (Hamsa), representing wisdom and discernment.

Worship & Temples

Unlike Vishnu and Shiva, Brahma has very few dedicated temples. The Brahma Temple at Pushkar, Rajasthan is the most famous. A curse from Saraswati or Shiva is said to be the reason for limited Brahma worship in Hindu tradition.

Significance in Hinduism

Brahma represents the creative force of the universe. He initiates each cosmic cycle by recreating the world. His role teaches that creation is the first step in the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution.
