Diwali diyas, Navratri garba sticks, Pongal kolams, Durga Puja pandals — Hindu festivals are a feast for the eyes. Torana — The Sacred Doorway

The meaning is layered: light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil. The oil represents the mind (impressions/vasanas), the wick is the ego, and the flame is the Atman (true self). Pandals, Idols, and Community Art

During Durga Puja in Bengal and Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra, entire communities create elaborate pandals (temporary structures) housing deity idols. These are massive collaborative art projects — sculptors, painters, electricians, carpenters, and designers work for months. Some pandals recreate famous temples, others use modern art themes. The clay idols are works of art that take weeks to craft and are immersed in water days later.
