Origins and Legends

Several legends are associated with Karwa Chauth. The most popular tells of Queen Veervati whose brothers, unable to see her suffer, tricked her with a mirror that mimicked the moon. When she broke her fast, her husband died. Only through a year of devoted penance and repeating the true fast did she bring him back. The story of Savitri winning Satyavan from Yama is also recounted on this day.

The Day-Long Fast

Women rise before sunrise to eat sargi, a pre-dawn meal prepared by their mother-in-law, consisting of sweets, fruits, and savories. After this, they consume nothing, not even water, until moonrise. Throughout the day, women apply henna (mehndi), dress in their wedding finery, and gather in groups to listen to the Karwa Chauth katha (story) recited by an elder.

The Moonrise Ritual

The climax comes at moonrise. Women gather on rooftops or open areas, perform the puja with a karwa (earthen pot), and wait for the moon to appear. They first view the moon through a sieve or through their dupatta, then look at their husband's face through the same sieve. The husband then offers his wife water and the first bite of food, breaking the fast.

Modern Evolution

Karwa Chauth has evolved significantly in modern India. Many husbands now fast alongside their wives as an expression of equality and mutual love. The festival has become a major commercial event with elaborate mehendi parties, salon bookings, and gift shopping. While primarily a North Indian tradition, Bollywood and social media have popularized it across the country.
