Chhath Puja — 4-Day Sun Worship Festival, Rituals & Significance

Chhath Puja stands apart from other Hindu festivals for its extraordinary discipline and the remarkable devotion of its practitioners. This ancient Vedic festival honors the Sun God and is celebrated with a level of austerity rarely seen in any religious tradition worldwide. Devotees, called vratis, observe a 36-hour fast without even a drop of water while performing elaborate rituals in river water during both sunset and sunrise. The festival has no priestly intermediary; devotees communicate directly with the Sun God through their offerings and prayers. Chhath is believed to be one of the oldest surviving rituals in continuous practice.

Day 1: Nahay Khay (Holy Bath and Eat)

The first day begins with devotees bathing in a river or sacred water body and cleaning their homes thoroughly. They prepare a simple meal of rice, lentils, and bottle gourd cooked using mango wood as fuel. This meal, eaten after the holy bath, is the last substantial food the devotee will consume for the next 36 hours. The cooking and eating are done with strict purity rules: no onion, garlic, or salt. The entire home is cleaned and purified for the sacred days ahead.

Day 2: Kharna (The Long Fast)

On the second day, the devotee fasts all day without water, breaking the fast only in the evening after sunset with kheer made from jaggery and rice, along with thick chapatis. This meal is first offered to the Sun God and then distributed as prasad. After eating this meal, the 36-hour waterless fast begins. The devotee prepares the thekua, a special wheat flour sweet, and other offerings that will be presented to the sun the following days.

Day 3: Sandhya Arghya (Evening Offerings)

The third day is the climax of Chhath Puja. In the late afternoon, devotees carry bamboo trays filled with fruits, thekua sweets, and sugarcane sticks to a river bank or pond. They wade into the water and face the setting sun, offering arghya by raising the tray of offerings toward the sun. This is the only Hindu festival that worships the setting sun, symbolizing gratitude for the blessings already received. Community members gather to support the devotees with folk songs and prayers.

Day 4: Usha Arghya (Dawn Offering)

Before sunrise on the final day, devotees return to the water body and offer arghya to the rising sun. This offering to the rising sun represents a prayer for future blessings and the continuation of life on earth. After this offering, the 36-hour fast is broken with ginger and jaggery water. The community celebrates the completion of this demanding spiritual observance. The devotee distributes prasad to family and neighbors. The discipline and devotion of Chhath Puja is believed to bring prosperity, health, and divine protection.
