Maha Navami, the ninth and most auspicious day of Navratri, holds special significance in the Hindu calendar as the day of Goddess Durga's ultimate victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Falling one day before Vijayadashami (Dussehra), Maha Navami is considered the most spiritually potent day of the entire Navratri period. In many traditions, the Goddess is believed to have slain Mahishasura on this day, and the victory is celebrated the following day as Vijayadashami.
In Bengal and Eastern India, Maha Navami is the grandest day of Durga Puja. The morning begins with Mahasnan and Shodashopachar Puja — an elaborate 16-step worship of Goddess Durga involving Vedic chanting, offering of 108 lotus flowers, and fire rituals (havan). The Navami Bhog, an elaborate feast offering to the Goddess, is prepared with great care and typically includes khichuri, labra, beguni, tomato chutney, payesh, and sandesh. The entire community gathers at pandals for the aarti, and the atmosphere is electric with devotion and celebration.
In North India, Maha Navami is celebrated as the day of Kanya Puja (also called Kanjak or Kanya Pujan). Nine young girls, representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga, are invited to homes and worshipped. Their feet are washed, they are offered halwa-puri as prasad, and given gifts and dakshina. This ritual symbolizes the worship of the divine feminine in its purest form and is considered among the most meritorious acts a devotee can perform during Navratri.
Maha Navami is also significant as Ayudha Puja day in South India, particularly in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. On this day, all tools, instruments, machinery, books, and vehicles are cleaned, decorated with flowers and kumkum, and worshipped. Factories and workshops are ceremonially cleaned, and no work is performed with the tools as a mark of respect. This practice acknowledges that the instruments of one's livelihood are manifestations of divine energy and deserve reverence.
