The Hindu Panchang (also spelled Panchangam) is a traditional Vedic calendar that has guided spiritual and daily life in Hindu culture for thousands of years. The word "Panchang" comes from Sanskrit, meaning "five limbs," referring to the five elements it tracks: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar day), and Karana (half lunar day).
Tithi is the lunar day in the Hindu calendar, calculated based on the angular relationship between the Sun and the Moon. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month - 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha). Each tithi has its own significance for rituals, fasting, and spiritual practices. For example, Ekadashi (the 11th tithi) is considered highly auspicious for fasting and devotion to Lord Vishnu.
Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions or star constellations through which the Moon passes during its monthly cycle. Each nakshatra has unique qualities and influences different aspects of life. Knowing the daily nakshatra helps in choosing auspicious times (muhurat) for important activities like weddings, housewarming ceremonies, and new business ventures.
Paksha refers to the two fortnightly phases of the Moon. Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) runs from Amavasya (new moon) to Purnima (full moon), while Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) runs from Purnima to Amavasya.
