Dussehra 2026: October 20 or 21? Correct Date

DevMarg Team16 October 20269 min read

The dhol has barely stopped from Navratri when a fresh worry starts in many homes: is Dussehra on the 20th or the 21st this year? If you have booked a Ravan dahan outing, planned a Shami puja, or set aside a day for new beginnings, the date matters. Get it wrong and you miss the muhurat that gives Vijayadashami its name.

This guide settles the question for Dussehra 2026, explains exactly why two dates float around, and walks you through the puja timing for New Delhi. You will also find the meaning behind Vijayadashami, what families actually do on the day, and the small mistakes first-timers make.

Dussehra 2026 date: 20 October, not 21

Dussehra 2026 is on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The festival marks Ashwin Shukla Dashami, and although the Dashami tithi touches both the 20th and 21st on some panchangs, the Aparahna muhurat, the late-afternoon window used for Vijayadashami worship, falls on 20 October. That is why almost every panchang and temple in India fixes the date as the 20th.

Vijayadashami is always decided by the Aparahna period, not by sunrise. So even when Dashami begins late on one day and spills into the next morning, the day that holds the afternoon stretch wins. For 2026, that day is the 20th.

Why 20 and 21 both appear

Hindu festivals follow the tithi, a lunar day that does not line up with the 24-hour clock. A tithi can start in the afternoon and end the next afternoon, so one tithi sometimes overlaps two English dates.

For Dussehra, the rule is specific. Vijayadashami puja is done during Aparahna, roughly the fourth part of the daylight, in the early-to-mid afternoon. The correct date is the one on which Aparahna coincides with Dashami tithi. In 2026 that overlap lands on 20 October, so the 21st drops out even if the tithi technically lingers into the next morning.

If you see a local calendar printing the 21st, it is usually reading sunrise-based (udaya) tithi instead of the Aparahna rule. For Vijayadashami, the Aparahna rule is the accepted one. You can cross-check the day against our 2026 festival calendar before making plans.

Note: The same tithi-versus-clock gap is why Navratri and Dussehra dates change by a day between different almanacs. Always check which rule a calendar uses before you trust a date.

Vijayadashami puja muhurat for New Delhi

Dussera 2026

The heart of Dussehra is the Vijaya Muhurat, a short auspicious window named after the festival itself. For New Delhi on 20 October 2026, the puja is performed in the Aparahna period of the afternoon. Treat the timings below as a guide and confirm the exact minutes against a panchang for your city, since they change with local sunrise and sunset.

WindowWhat it is for
AparahnaMain Vijayadashami puja
Vijaya MuhuratStarting ventures, new work
EveningRavan dahan, Shami puja

Vijaya Muhurat is considered ideal for anything you want to begin: a new vehicle, a shop, a child's first lessons, a business deal. People across north India step out in the evening for Ravan dahan, the burning of effigies, which is a public event rather than a home ritual. For muhurat details on other occasions through the year, our Muhurat section keeps city-wise timings.

What Vijayadashami actually means

Vijayadashami means the tenth day of victory, and it carries two linked stories. In the north, it marks the day Lord Rama killed the demon king Ravana, the close of the Ramlila that runs through the nine Navratri nights. In the east and among Shakta traditions, it marks Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, the day her idols are given a tearful farewell.

Both stories say the same thing: good overcomes evil, and the right effort wins in the end. That is why the day is read as the best time to start something you have been putting off.

The festival also closes Navratri, the nine nights of Durga worship. If you fasted or kept the vrat through Navratri, Dussehra is when the observance ends and the celebration begins. You can read the fasting rules in our Navratri Vrat guide.

the tenth day of Ashwin Shukla paksha, which is what Dashami means.

How families observe the day

The rituals vary by region, but a few run almost everywhere.

Shami puja honours the Shami tree or its leaves, a tradition tied to the Pandavas retrieving their hidden weapons. Astra puja involves cleaning and honouring tools, vehicles and account books, common in trading and farming families. Aparajita puja offers to Goddess Aparajita, "the undefeated", for success in new work. Ravan dahan, the evening burning of Ravana effigies in open grounds, closes the day for many. In the south, Saraswati and Ayudha puja honours books, instruments and tools, often with Vidyarambham, a child's first writing lesson.

Say you run a small two-person design studio in Pune. Many owners use the Vijaya Muhurat to switch on a new laptop for the first time, place a token payment on a pending client deal, or open fresh account ledgers, treating the afternoon as a clean start for the quarter. There is no rule forcing this, but the timing is widely trusted for it.

Dussehra, Durga Puja and Navratri: how they connect

These three names describe one stretch of the Hindu calendar, and people often mix them up. Navratri is the nine nights of Durga worship. Durga Puja is the Bengali and eastern form of those same nights, built around detailed pandals. Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, is the tenth day that follows and closes the sequence.

ObservanceDaysFocus
Navratri9 nightsNine forms of Durga
Durga PujaLast 4-5 daysDurga's arrival and victory
Vijayadashami10th dayVictory, farewell, new starts

So Dussehra is not a separate festival bolted on; it is the finish line. In the east, the Durga idols are immersed on this day, which is why Vijayadashami there feels like a goodbye as much as a celebration.

Mistakes first-timers make

The commonest error is treating Dussehra as a sunrise-to-sunset festival like a birthday. It is not. The puja is tied to the Aparahna window, so doing it at dawn misses the point of the Vijaya Muhurat.

The second is assuming the Ravan dahan time is the puja time. The effigy burning is an evening community event; your home Shami or Astra puja happens earlier, in the afternoon. The third is buying a date off a single wall calendar without checking which tithi rule it used, which is exactly how the 20-versus-21 confusion spreads.

Watch out: Do not postpone a new venture to the 21st on the assumption that Dashami "continues". The Vijaya Muhurat for 2026 is on 20 October. Starting on the 21st misses it.

Planning around Dussehra 2026

Mark Tuesday, 20 October 2026 for Vijayadashami. Keep the afternoon free for your Shami, Astra or Aparajita puja, use the Vijaya Muhurat for anything you want to begin, and save the evening for Ravan dahan if your town holds one. Confirm the exact city timings on a current panchang, because the muhurat minutes move with local sunrise.

If Dussehra falls in your travel or work window, block the date early; trains and flights fill fast around the long festive stretch. For the days that lead into it, our Navratri Vrat page has the nine-night schedule, and the full 2026 Vrat and festival calendar lets you see Dussehra in context with Ekadashi, Pradosh and Purnima dates around it. May the day bring you a clean, confident start.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dussehra 2026 a government holiday across India?

Vijayadashami is a gazetted central holiday in India, so most government offices, banks and schools stay closed on 20 October 2026. State rules vary, and some private workplaces treat it as a restricted holiday. Check your state's official holiday list and your employer's calendar, since observance differs between north, east and south India.

Why do some calendars show Dussehra on 21 October 2026?

A calendar showing the 21st is likely using the sunrise-based (udaya) tithi rather than the Aparahna rule that governs Vijayadashami. The Dashami tithi can linger into the next morning, but the afternoon Aparahna window that the puja needs falls on 20 October 2026, so the 20th is the accepted date.

Can I do Vijayadashami puja in the morning if I am busy in the afternoon?

The Vijaya Muhurat is an afternoon (Aparahna) window, so morning worship misses the specific timing the day is known for. If you genuinely cannot make the afternoon, you can still offer a simple prayer earlier, but the recognised muhurat for starting ventures and performing the main puja stays in the afternoon.

Do I need to break my Navratri fast before Dussehra puja?

Most people complete the Navratri vrat on the ninth day with kanya pujan, then observe Dussehra as a celebration day rather than a fasting day. If you kept a nine-night fast, you usually break it before Dashami. Follow the custom your family has always kept, since fasting rules vary by region and tradition.

Is Ravan dahan done at home or only in public grounds?

Ravan dahan, the burning of Ravana effigies, is a community event held in open maidans in the evening, not a home ritual. At home, families do Shami puja, Astra puja or Aparajita puja earlier in the afternoon. You attend Ravan dahan as a spectator; you do not perform it inside your house.

Is it auspicious to buy a car or start a business on Dussehra 2026?

Yes. Vijayadashami is one of the most trusted days in the year for new beginnings, including buying vehicles, opening shops and starting ventures, because the Vijaya Muhurat signals victory. Many people deliberately take delivery or make a token start on this day. Confirm the exact muhurat minutes for your city on a panchang first.

Does Dussehra date change between north and south India in 2026?

The Vijayadashami date stays 20 October 2026 across India because it follows the same Aparahna rule everywhere. What changes is the ritual: the north centres on Ravan dahan and Ramlila, while the south observes Ayudha puja, Saraswati puja and Vidyarambham. The date is shared; the customs differ.

What is the difference between Dussehra and Durga Puja immersion?

They fall on the same day. Durga Puja immersion (visarjan) is the eastern tradition of farewelling Durga idols on Vijayadashami, while Dussehra in the north marks Rama's victory with Ravan dahan. Both happen on 20 October 2026; one bids goodbye to the Goddess, the other burns the demon king's effigy.

Can children start school or studies on Dussehra 2026?

Yes, Vidyarambham on Vijayadashami is a well-known south Indian custom where children write their first letters, often in rice or on a slate. Many families choose this day to begin a child's formal learning because it is considered an auspicious start. The 20 October afternoon muhurat is used for this across Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
