The Char Dham Yatra — encompassing the four sacred shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in Uttarakhand — is considered one of the holiest pilgrimages in Hinduism. These temples sit high in the Himalayas at altitudes ranging from 3,100 to 3,800 meters, and are accessible only during a limited window each year. The portals (temple doors) typically open in late April or early May (on Akshaya Tritiya) and close in October or November (around Diwali), depending on weather conditions and the Hindu calendar.
The best months for the Char Dham Yatra are May, June, September, and October. May and June offer pleasant daytime temperatures of 15-20 degrees Celsius with clear skies, making them ideal for the trek to Kedarnath (16 km one way) and comfortable darshan at all four sites. However, these are also the peak months with the heaviest crowds — expect long queues of 4-8 hours at Kedarnath and Badrinath. The monsoon season (July-August) brings heavy rainfall, landslides, and road closures, making travel dangerous and inadvisable despite the temples remaining open. September and October, after the monsoons recede, offer a beautiful window with lush green valleys, fewer crowds, and crisp mountain air, though temperatures begin dropping significantly.
Planning your itinerary wisely is crucial. The traditional order is Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath — moving west to east. Most tours take 10-12 days by road from Haridwar or Rishikesh. The new Char Dham Highway project has significantly improved road quality, reducing travel times between sites. Helicopter services are available for Kedarnath (from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sirsi helipads), costing Rs 5,000-7,000 per person one way, and can be booked through the UCADA or private operators.
Essential preparation includes registering on the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra portal (mandatory biometric registration), carrying warm clothing even in summer (nighttime temperatures can drop to 0-5 degrees Celsius), acclimatizing to altitude gradually, and carrying basic medicines for altitude sickness. Physical fitness is important, especially for the Kedarnath trek. Pony and palki (palanquin) services are available for those who cannot walk. Start your trip planning at least 2-3 months in advance for accommodation bookings, as options near the temples are limited and fill up fast during peak season.
